How Hyrox Competition Works: Divisions and Scoring

Understanding Hyrox competition categories, divisions, pro races, and how scoring and rankings work.

Overview

Hyrox competition operates on multiple levels: local events, national rankings, continental championships, and the World Championship. Understanding how the system works helps you set realistic goals and track progress against the global field.

Divisions Explained

Open is the standard division - standard weights, no qualifying needed. Pro uses heavier weights on farmers carry and attracts serious competitive athletes. Age Group divisions (U24, 30-34, 35-39, etc.) let you compete against your peers. Each has separate rankings.

Pro Vs Open

The only weight difference is farmers carry: Pro men use 2x32kg vs Open's 2x24kg, Pro women use 2x24kg vs Open's 2x16kg. Everything else is identical. Pro attracts athletes targeting sub-60 minute times. Open is where 95% of participants race.

Doubles Format

Two athletes as a team. One runs while the other does the station, then you switch. Strategy matters - assign stations based on strengths. If one partner is a stronger runner, they can take more running legs. Communication during transitions is key.

Relay Format

Four athletes, each completing 2 full rounds (2km running + 2 stations each). Team strategy assigns rounds to play to individual strengths. Put your strongest runner on rounds with less demanding stations. Relay is the most social and beginner-friendly format.

World Championships

Held annually, typically in a major European city. Qualification is by finishing time at any regular-season event - the cutoff varies by division and gender. Pro athletes and top Open finishers qualify. It's the pinnacle of Hyrox competition with the deepest field.
