Overview
Your first Hyrox will be chaotic, loud, and probably harder than you expect. These tips are from people who learned the hard way. The goal for your first race is simple: finish, learn your pacing, and have fun.
Pacing Strategy
Start slower than you think you should. The first 3 stations feel easy because you're fresh - resist the temptation to sprint. Aim for even 1km splits throughout. If your first km is 4:30 and your last is 6:30, you went out too hard. Even splits win.
Nutrition Race Day
Eat your normal pre-workout meal 2-3 hours before your wave. Nothing new on race day. Bring a gel or banana to eat in the start pen if your wave is delayed. You don't need nutrition during the race unless you're going over 90 minutes. Hydrate well the day before.
Gear Checklist
Shoes you've trained in (not new ones). Comfortable shorts/leggings without loose drawstrings. Fitted shirt (baggy catches on the SkiErg). Chalk if allowed (check venue rules). Confirmation email on phone. ID. Water bottle. Change of clothes for after.
Warmup
Jog easy for 10 minutes. Do 5-10 air squats, arm circles, and hip openers. Practice 10 wall ball reps if there's a warm-up area. Don't overdo it - you have 13km ahead of you. The first 1km run IS your warm-up. Save your energy.
Common Mistakes
Going out too fast on run 1. Not practicing sled push technique before race day. Wearing brand new shoes. Forgetting to eat enough the morning of. Stopping completely between stations instead of maintaining movement. Trying to PR every station instead of pacing for the total.
Mental Game
Break it into rounds, not one massive effort. Each round is just 1km + one station. That's manageable. When it gets hard (stations 5-8), focus only on the current rep. Count down, not up. The finish line energy from the crowd will carry you through the last wall balls.
